Village West Yard of the Month
The Village West September Yard of the Month winner is 11414 Piping Rock. This is a corner lot with mixed sun and shade conditions. There is repetition of plants allowing the landscape to flow between the front and side. Beds frame the house, all edged in bullrock. The landscape uses perennials so we’ve been able to see the plants in constant bloom since spring.

Along the side of the house are large, mature Texas Sage, yellow Cestrum and Loropetalum with its red leaves. The Sage’s lavender blooms are displayed sporadically during the year (spring and sometimes following rain). The bed continues around the house with more yellow Cestrum. Additionally, Nandina, Foxtail fern, Firecracker plant, and Pride of Barbados. The Pride of Barbados has unusual orange and yellow blossoms. It’s a “Texas superstar” plant. These are tough, reliable plants that thrive with little care.

The large, curving front beds contain Thryallis or Golden showers, red Lantana and Society Garlic. The Thryallis is semi-tropical and there are yellow blossoms from summer until the first freeze. If it does freeze, it comes back from the roots. The size of these plants show how quickly it grows! The front beds also contain coral Roses (perhaps Drift roses) and more Foxtail fern.
All these blooming perennials can be maintained at much smaller scale if you are interested in trying in your landscape. A plus, all of the flowering plants are pollinator attractors – bees and butterflies are plentiful!
Please stop by to congratulate the owners on their successful efforts and admire their yard.
