Village West Yard of the Month

Village West Yard of the Month

July 11, 2022 by Susan |

Village West Yard of the Month

The Village West July Yard of the Month winner is 11315 Ella Lee Lane. Who says a great yard needs to be complicated?  This landscape is formal, but simple using only 4 types of evergreens. It does a great job of complimenting the house year-round.

July Yard of the Month winner at 11315 Ella Lee LaneIf you have one of the many homes with bare brick walls on the front of the house, take a look at how this homeowner took a boring wall. Turns it into an asset.  They attached 3 lattice panels to the front garage wall for climbing vines forming a backdrop for the remaining landscape. On the other wall they’ve created a “living” lattice design. Vines are trained to follow the pattern. These wall treatments are the stars of this landscape and create real curb appeal.  The same vine is on both walls. Star or Confederate Jasmine. It is an evergreen vine, producing heavily scented small white flowers for a few weeks in early Spring.  Since this is a formal landscape, it does take some effort to train the vines to grow on the “living” lattice design. Additionally, routine trimming to keep the vines on the lattice panels looking neat.

The bed on the left contains Texas or Silverado Sage in the back, Japanese Boxwood in front and Iris on either end. The Boxwood is repeated on the right. Trim each Boxwood into a spherical shape. Creating formality in the bed design. Boxwood is a good choice for this type of treatment because it’s evergreen and it grows very slowly. Also, making it easy to retain the look. (Just be careful, Boxwood can develop a terminal fungus. Not only killing a single plant but can spread to others. Another choice is Yaupon holly. It has the same growth characteristics and is immune to infection.)

The Sage blooms on/off during the growing season producing lavender flowers. The Iris blooms periodically during the Spring and Summer.
