Village West Yard of the Month

The Village West August Yard of the Month winner is 11318 Overbrook Lane. This yard is certainly not struggling in the heat we’ve had so far this summer! Your first impression will be “lots of color”.

The owner achieves this using a single annual, Vinca or periwinkle, in pink, red, purple and white. The Vincas edge the front beds, the bed around the trees and fill pots at the street. The Vinca is a Texas Superstar plant, tolerating heat, high humidity and full sun (can bloom in part shade). It is also drought tolerant, but does best with regular watering. Earlier generations of Vinca or periwinkle had major fungus issues making them a poor choice for Houston. This Superstar Vinca is developed to have resistance to the fungus, making it a great summer annual.

This landscape features Houston’s  most popular – and most used – shrubs – Japanese Yaupon, Japanese Boxwood and Waxleaf Ligustrum. First, these shrubs are evergreen. Second, they are generally healthy (some fungal issues with Boxwood. Lastly, they are live long. They are planted in a tiered formation against the house, with Yaupon in the front, Boxwood in the middle position and Ligustrum against the house. The Boxwood and Yaupon grow slowly so they don’t require a lot of maintenance. The Ligustrum can grow to 10’, so these are neatly in place with routine trimming. Also, Ligustrum screens the edge of the property, blocking view of the neighboring driveway.
