Village West Yard of the Month
Congratulations to August’s Village West Yard of the Month winners at 11414 Burgoyne. Corner lots can create a landscaping challenge with two public yards to maintain, but our winner has achieved a well-manicured yard on both the front and the side. The landscape flows between the two areas, with just enough repetition of plantings to make this look like one big lawn (it is a big lawn!) Our winner demonstrates one of the keys to success when landscaping a large yard – simplicity.
Front Yard Landscape
A bed at the front corner both anchors the front and side yards and is the focal point of the entire landscape. This bed contains a large, well-trimmed Sago Palm with Asian Jasmine beneath and Yaupon forming a backdrop. Sago’s take up a lot of room, but this bed allows its full spread without encroaching onto the sidewalk. It is edged in paver brick, that prevents mulch from washing onto the sidewalk & street.
Side Yard Landscape
August’s Yard of the Month side yard is dominated by two beautiful Oaks shading the entire side of the lawn. A bed curves along the side of the house, from the front door and extends to edge the driveway. A grouping of creeping Juniper, Indian Hawthorne and Lantana frame the front door. Low, mature Juniper shrubs flank the side of the house, interspersed with Red Yucca, red Firecracker plant, more yellow Lantana and Rosemary. This bed terminates with another Sago palm, surrounded by Hosta, Coleus, Foxtail and Juniper.
The dominant shrub in the front beds is Indian Hawthorne, with a Bougainvillea taking center stage. Burgundy-leafed Crepe Myrtles add contrast in the front beds. Varying sizes of clay pots are used throughout the yard as landscape elements – some filled with plants, others adding interest. Among the potted plants are Plumeria and Bougainvillea.
Lastly, We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the lush green lawn – work in the spring (and a lot of rain lately) pays off with thick turf!
