Village West Yard of the Month
Congratulations to October’s Village West Yard of the Month winner at 11534 Piping Rock Drive. Not only is it visually pleasing, but the owner added seasonal interest with mini pumpkin and hay bale accents. This landscape was most visibly transformed over the past year, but the owner has been working it for 3 years since she moved in! A lot of work – and plants – have gone into this landscape. This yard has all kinds of light – sun, shade and in-between. This gives the owner great flexibility in plant selection.
Plant Selection
There are three beds at the curb in full sun: a crepe myrtle, a lilac Althea (Rose of Sharon) and a Bird of Paradise that is always blooming. The new beds under the oaks include Foxtail fern and Flax lily, chartreuse Sweet potato vine and pink and yellow annuals. The green and white strap leaves of the Flax lily and the chartreuse Sweet potato vine provide a color “pop”, as well as a contrasting backdrop for other plants. Major components of beds against the house include azaleas and Knockout roses. The only plants remaining from the original landscape – Japanese Yew – flank either end of the house and small junipers frame either side of the front door. Pink oleanders grab your attention from the side of the house.
Additional Landscape
All the beds of October’s Yard of the Month including at the curb, islands around the mature oaks and beds along the house and front fence – have a clean edge with moss rock along the perimeter. Additionally, large river rock fills in the side of the driveway. The owner has strategically placed solar landscape lights and multi-colored glass gazing balls throughout the beds. The solar lights reflect the color from the gazing balls – quite a sight at night!
The owner comes by her love of gardening honestly – her family – Mom, sister and 2 brothers are also avid gardeners. Stop by to see this “new” landscape, watch it mature, and check out the dazzling lights at night!
